• What are services like at First Methodist?
Classic Worship in the Sanctuary (view current service times)
The tradition of classic worship at First Methodist is strong and rich. The resources of historic hymns, scripture, prayer, and preaching that strives to be both faithful to the gospel and engaging to the contemporary mind all play a part. The strong music ministry of First Methodist with stirring organ music, periodic Choral Masterwork Sundays, and the regular presence of the church’s noted Chancel Choir adds a crucial element to the mix.
The Open Door at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater at 11:15 am
This contemporary service uses modern technology and up-to-date language to bring God’s message to God’s people. The Open Door Band leads participants in a wide variety of music, including pop, soul, and jazz. Dress is casual, and the atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly. Grab a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and get ready for a spiritual experience relevant to your life. The Buskirk-Chumley Theater is located 1/2 block west of the church on Kirkwood Avenue.

• What’s the difference between First Methodist vs FUMC vs First United Methodist, etc?
Even though we have multiple services in multiple locations, we are one community that is United & Open to all. First Methodist is the name we use to refer to our overall community of people, services, ministries and more. The First Methodist community includes everyone who attends any of our services, whether the Classic Worship Services (inside the Sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church building) or the Contemporary Worship Services of The Open Door (held inside the Buskirk-Chumley Theater) Jubilee (our college & youth adult group) or any of our other small groups, ministries or programs. In the past, you may have heard some people use the abbreviation “FUMC” which we no longer use because it was specific to our primary building and failed to represent our other programs (plus it was pretty confusing for new people to understand what it meant!).
