A New Chapter. The Same Mission

Change is scary.  And yet change is inevitable.  Even good change is scary.  And yet change is inevitable.  In the midst of a continually changing world, the apostle Paul reminds us, “And we know in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to God’s purpose” (Romans 8:28).  Marrying the reality of a change with Paul’s admonition, we are confident of a few things:  God is always working for good; we are called to work with God in God’s good work in the world.  Sometimes seeing the good work, the next good step, the God-path is difficult.  But there are times when the path is clear and albeit fraught with some challenges, it is THE path, the next good step, the God path, the next chapter in our faithful journey with Christ.

A new chapter begins in August for the First Methodist Preschool (formerly Parents Day Out, formerly Moms Day Out).  Monroe County United Ministries (MCUM) will lease the preschool space to house a downtown location of their excellent childcare and early childhood education programming.  MCUM has been offering childcare to families in Monroe County for 77 years.  Erin Predmore, Executive Director of MCUM explains, “We are a nationally-accredited, 4-star Paths to Quality program, and we pride ourselves on providing high quality early childhood education on a sliding scale so that ALL families, regardless of income, can access this important resource for their children.”  MCUM will provide full-time, year-round childcare programming, and their sliding scale supports parents who are working or attending school.  Care for infants to pre-K will continue along with the addition of breakfast, lunch and snacks provided every day on site.  This is, as Pastor Mark says, “a kingdom win,” and a more effective way to provide an integral service to the community, a community where 62% of children do not have access to high-quality early childhood development and care.

The Church Council approved this proposal on Monday.  Teachers were informed on Tuesday.  Preschool families learned of the upcoming changes on Wednesday.  There are some logistical requirements as we make this transition.  First Methodist Preschool will close on 26 May 2017 in order to make the necessary updates and alterations to the first-floor area for accreditation as a Level 3 facility.  The “new” preschool will open in August.  Alex Lamb, Director of Children’s Ministries, and Pastor Stacee are working with preschool teachers and families throughout the next few months.  All families currently enrolled in the preschool are guaranteed a spot in August, if they choose.  Current teachers are encouraged to apply for positions with MCUM, and any current teacher in good standing who applies will receive a strong recommendation from Alex and Pastor Stacee.

First Methodist is called to “change the world by sharing God’s love.”  This is our vision for ourselves as God’s people who love Jesus Christ.  We have an amazing space on the first-floor of our building.  God intends us to use that space to its fullest capacity so that God’s love can be shared to its fullest capacity.  Partnering with MCUM is the next chapter of our church’s story in this community.  Partnering with MCUM is the next chapter of our love story for God’s people.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.  I’m excited to see to hear how the story unfolds.

Peace and Love,

Rev. Stacee

Join us this Sunday at 8:45, 10 and 11:15 as we continue asking questions in our BEGINNINGS sermon series.

If you are relatively new to First Methodist and The Open Door, I invite you to join our 1st at First meeting on Sunday February 5 at 1:30 pm, in Thurston Parlor at 219 E. 4th Street. You’ll get to meet some new people, ask questions, visit with a pastor and learn some things about First Methodist.

As many of you know we have the Interfaith Winter Shelter at First Methodist on Sunday nights. The shelter is experiencing an urgent need for overnight volunteers.  Please contact Allison Larmann at alarmann@umail.iu.edu to ask questions and determine if this would be a goof fit for you.  Individualized training will be provided.
