THIS WEEK

WEDNESDAY CONNECTIONS STARTS BACK SEPTEMBER 8!
The many activities offered on Wednesday evenings allow church members and friends to gather together around a mid-week meal, connect with others through small groups and adult education opportunities, and give children a chance to participate in the life of the church. A meal will be served in the Great Hall from 5-7:00 p.m. Come join us!

HIGHLIGHTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEW! JACKSON FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Harold and Lillian Jackson have generously established a scholarship endowment fund in honor of their family. It is their hope that the fund will assist college students who are actively involved in their church and community, and who seek to exemplify Christ in their lives in their pursuit of academic excellence. If you would like to make a contribution to the Jackson Family Scholarship Fund, please make your check payable to FUMC and put "Jackson Scholarship" on the memo line.

CONGREGATIONAL UPDATE:
A search is ongoing to fill the position vacated by John Leonard, who recently accepted a faculty position at the College of New Jersey. While the search continues, we are fortunate to have interim directores for our children's choirs and the Wesley choir, and we also have an interim worship coordinator. We expect to complete the search and fill the position(s) by September 30. If you have questions, contact George Prunell (gpurnell@fumcb.org).

THANK YOU FROM THE WEDNESDAY PANTRY
Thank you to all who helped unload the commodities Monday night for the Wednesday Pantry. Because there was such good help, the task of unloading and putting the foods in storage was much easier and quicker.

PDO OPENINGS
The Parent's Day Out Program has several openings for Fall 2010. Please call the Director (339-0032) if you are interested!

SHALOM NEEDS
The boxes at the entrances to FUMC are still designated Shalom and Shalom still needs our help. Shampoo, bath soap, and deodorant are needed for the showers. Laundry soap is always in short supply for the washing machines. Bottled water in this heat are life savers. Feminine hygiene products and diapers are needed. And of course, there is always coffee! Thanks.

FUMC WEDNESDAY PANTRY
Reminder: 1st Sunday of the month is our regular Sunday for food offerings for the pantry. Please bring fruit cocktail, baked beans, and/or tuna and salmon and place them in the designated containers at the 4th Street entrance and at the Open Door worship. In addition to regular canned goods, the Wednesday Pantry can use pop-top cans of tuna, sardines, chicken, and vienna sausages. In addition, small packages of cookies, chips, pretzels and/or snacks would be appreciated. These items are given to people coming to the Wednesday Pantry who do not have a kitchen and/or are homeless. They are very appreciative that the Pantry tries to answer their food needs for the week.
The Pantry always needs large grocery bags; we are in the process of obtaining cloth bags to distribute. But, there is always a need for the paper grocery bags.
Thank you for your continued generosity with your generous monetary gifts, your food gifts, grocery bags, and your gifts of time.

TO HONOR NEIL ALBERSON ..
..and celebrate his three-year mission to Guatemala through the United Methodist Individual Volunteer Program, the Wesley Conventicle is sponsoring an effort to gather financial support to make his work in the mission field there more productive. Many of the members of the Conventicle will contribute ten dollars per month to this fund. The members of the Conventicle encourage all members of our congregation who are able to support Neil's mission and wish to do so to join them.

Everyone is invited to write a check each month as well and place it along with those from the conventicle in the collection plate. Rather than contributing monthly, those who participate in this effort may want to write one or two checks each year, making six-month or yearly gifts. Those who are unable to commit to a regular schedule of giving are invited to make a single gift. Either way, this will make Neil's work in the mission field a fully supported mission of our church. Checks may be made to FUMC, with "Alberson I.V. Mission" on the memo line.

FUMC MEMBERS BETWEEN 1908 & 1912
As we are preparing to celebrate the Centennial of the dedication of our sanctuary, we are anxious to discover the names of as many individuals as possible who were members of our church between 1908 and 1912. If you are related to or know of individuals who were members of our church from 1908-1912, please give this information to the church office marked, "Attention: History and Archives."

LIONS' CLUB EYEGLASSES COLLECTION BOXES
The Lions' Club has placed two collection boxes in our church building for used eyeglasses. Please help the Lions' Club in their effort to collect eyeglasses which can be recycled and reused to provide eyeglasses for people who cannot afford them. One of the boxes is outside the sanctuary and one is at the PDO entrance; both are with the collection boxes for Shalom Center and Wednesday Food Pantry items.

     Drawing paper                 Crayons               Glitter               Playdough

A CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF THE DEDICATION OF THE SANCTUARY BUILDING
Sunday, September 19
There will be many events associated with this special day in the history of our church. During the 11:00 a.m. worship service, 50 year + members will be recognized. We are hoping for a large turnout and ask that you invite anyone you may know of this generation.

Following the 11:00 a.m. service, there will be a short reception in the Gathering Place where light food and drinks will be served.

The emphasis of this program is to be on the people of FUMC (or the First Methodist Episcopal Church) in the 1910 era, rather than on the building itself. Displays on the members and memorabilia of 1910 will be in the Gathering Place from 10:30 a.m. through the reception. Information will be available on who those members were, what they were doing, and where they live in the community.

Please come and celebrate this historic event of our congegation.
