Last week we learned about Abraham and Sarah, who even into their old age could not conceive a child. In desperation, Sarah forces her slave Hagar to lie with Abraham. When Hagar becomes pregnant, she looks with contempt upon Sarah. A jealous and angry Sarah treats her harshly, so Hagar flees to the wilderness. This is the first time she encounters the “God who sees” and has not forgotten her. The next time, Sarah’s young son Isaac is caught frolicking with Hagar’s son Ishmael. This time, Sarah bans Hagar to the wilderness, where once again God provides for them. We will explore the complex relationship between Sarah and Hagar, as we also remember the God who always sees and provides for us, even in the depths of the wilderness.

This message explores Abraham in light of God’s promise to him, how he embraced it by faith, confirmed it through covenant, and expressed it through a life of obedience and witness. How does that speak to us as believers whereas the principle of covenant fidelity and the purpose of our blessing towards others?
